Two men stopped for speeding fled deputies about noon on Thursday but were later arrested, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office reported.

Derrick Antonio McLaughlin, 27, of Lacoochee was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest without violence. Roston Emmanuel, 26, of Dade City was charged with possession of cocaine and resisting without violence.

Deputy Will Power said he spotted McLaughlin speeding and pulled him over at Cortez Boulevard and Hadley Drive. Power said he smelled marijuana and asked both men to get out of the car.

When Emmanuel, the passenger, stepped out of the car, a small plastic bag holding drugs fell out, Power said. He started to cuff Emmanuel, but he ran away. Meanwhile, Power reported, McLaughlin got into his car and sped off.

The deputy chased Emmanuel, who finally stopped and was arrested, authorities said.

Another deputy followed McLaughlin but abandoned the chase because it was too dangerous, authorities said.

He later arrived at the Hernando County Jail with his mother and turned himself in, a sheriff's report said.

He had recently been released from prison after serving time for armed robbery, authorities said.
