A closer look: one Hillsborough church
By CONNIE DREW First United Methodist Church of LutzLOCATION: 2207 W Lutz-Lake Fern Road SERVICES: Sunday worship service at 8:15 a.m. (traditional), 9:30 a.m. (blended-traditional and praise songs) and 11 a.m. (contemporary); Sunday school classes for all ages 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. LEADERSHIP: The Rev. Richard D. Cabot HISTORY: First United Methodist, the oldest church in Lutz, was organized in 1911 and held services in the first school built in Lutz. Many of the original Lutz pioneers still attend. MEMBERSHIP: 600 COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Sponsors KICK (Kid's In Christ's Kingdom) for first- through fifth-graders who meet for worship and classes including art, games, drama and puppets, videos and a computer lab that bring Bible lessons to life; First Place, a Bible-based wellness program; Faith Finders, for third-graders and younger to discover biblical truths that combines fun with learning; Caring Callers, who stay in touch with the homebound through visits, phone calls and cards; Drama and Dance, Prayer Chain and Intercessory Prayer ministries. Provides space for Promise Keepers and Girls and Boys Scout Troop meetings. NOTABLE: Provides free tutoring for children in first- through 12th-grades; has an innovative and outstanding children's, youth and music program including specific choirs for preschoolers, children, and youth. Longtime sponsor of Scouting programs. Moms in Touch meet at 1 p.m. each Monday to focus on prayer for children. Quest, the college-age group for recent graduates and young adults through age 25, meet for Bible Study from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays.
