Film critics' group picks Pianist as best picture

The Pianist, the biography of a Polish-Jewish pianist and Holocaust survivor, took top prizes for best picture, director, actor and screenplay at the National Society of Film Critics awards Saturday.

Alfonso Cuaron's coming-of-age romp Y Tu Mama Tambien came in second in the best picture voting, while Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her, a film about a nurse caring for a comatose ballet dancer, came in third.

The group of 55 newspaper and magazine film critics held its 37th awards ceremony at Sardi's Restaurant in Manhattan.

The critics honored Roman Polanski for directing The Pianist, actor Adrien Brody for his portrayal of Wladyslaw Szpilman, and Ronald Harwood for the screenplay.

Diane Lane was named best actress for playing an adulterous housewife in Unfaithful.

Christopher Walken was named best supporting actor for his portrayal of a con man's father in Catch Me If You Can.

Patricia Clarkson was named best supporting actress for playing a friend of 1950s housewife Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven. The movie also received an award for Ed Lachman's cinematography.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown was named best documentary, while Y Tu Mama Tambien was named best foreign film.

Something Phishy about guest at band's concert

Is Tom Hanks a Phish-head or not? Publicists for the actor said Friday that an onstage cameo at Phish's New Year's Eve concert by someone identified as Hanks was almost certainly not him.

"He was going with his family for a skiing holiday and had no plans to be in New York," publicist Wendy Morris said, adding that the actor himself could not be reached Friday.

"There is no way he would come to New York for New Year's Eve."

The Associated Press, the New York Times and other news outlets reported that Hanks appeared briefly on stage at the jam band's Madison Square Garden concert. The sold-out concert was Phish's first after a two-year hiatus.

A clip of Hanks' movie Cast Away was shown and his name was announced. A man who looked like the Oscar-winning actor then appeared on stage.

The apparent hoax was reported Friday by the online site Salon.com.

Brooke Shields expecting her first child

After months of working at it, Brooke Shields is not-so-suddenly pregnant, reports E!Online.

The former Suddenly Susan star has announced that she and husband Chris Henchy are expecting their first baby in May.

"Getting pregnant was not easy," Shields says. "Chris and I had been hoping for a while, just waiting and wondering and trying."

Shields and Henchy, a former writer-producer for ABC's Spin City, tied the knot in April 2001.
