Daulton again faces DUI charge

For a second time, former Devil Rays bullpen coach and Phillies catcher Darren Daulton went to jail on his birthday.

Tampa police stopped Daulton's 2003 Mercedes Benz on Friday, just after 11 p.m., near Cypress and Trask streets.

"He was subsequently charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended driver's license and refusal to submit to the breath test," police spokeswoman Katie Hughes said.

Daulton, 41, of Belleair was released Saturday morning on $1,000 bail.

On Jan. 3, 2001 -- his 39th birthday -- Daulton went to jail after slamming his BMW into a tree off Interstate 75 in Hernando County.

He pleaded guilty to reckless driving more than a year later.

Daulton also was charged with DUI in Pinellas County in November 1988, records say.

Former Cy Young Award winner Dwight Gooden also was arrested Friday night in Tampa and charged with driving with a suspended license.

The 38-year-old was arrested after a sheriff's deputy noticed Gooden's car failing to stay in a lane on Interstate 275, Hillsborough County Sheriff's officials said in a taped telephone recording.

Gooden, who pitched for the Devil Rays and four other teams, was charged with knowingly driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor.
