STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Kelly Mazzante scored 17 of her 22 in the first half as No. 17 Penn State upset No. 9 Minnesota 83-53 Monday night.
With the score tied at 17, the Nittany Lions went on a 10-0 run, taking a 27-17 lead with 4:20 left in the half.
Mazzante hit a 3-pointer during the run and scored nine more in the last 6:15 of the half.
It was the first loss of the season for the Golden Gophers, whose ranking was the highest in program history. Minnesota's points were 14 fewer than their season low of 67 at Providence.
Penn State opened the second half with a 19-5 run, taking a 61-28 lead on Jess Strom's fastbreak layup.

NO. 14 MISS. ST. 72, UAB 50: Tan White and Renae Jones scored 15 each as the host Bulldogs avenged last season's 20-point loss.
FSU: Freshman guard Ganiyat Adeduntan, who averaged 13.3 points and 2.7 rebounds in three games off the bench, was named ACC rookie of the week for the second time.
