PINELLAS PARK -- A 36-year-old Pinellas Park man has been arrested on charges he strangled his wife of 14 years.

Edward W. Griffith, a laborer, was charged with second-degree murder Monday, two days after his 42-year-old wife, Ann M. Griffith, was found in a motel on 34th Street N.

Police said the couple was arguing in their room at the La-Mark Charles, where they were living since October.

Griffith strangled his wife without premeditation, according to an arrest affidavit. Police spokesman Capt. Sanfield Forseth did not provide further details on the death, but he said the murder charge against Griffith could be upgraded to first-degree murder by the state attorney.

The couple has a history of arrests. Griffith has been arrested on burglary and battery charges. His wife has been arrested on charges of prostitution.

Griffith is being held in the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $60,713 bail.
