Security at BayWalk appreciated

Re: Security heavy-handed at BayWalk, letter, Jan. 5

I for one appreciate the job Sgt. Gary Robbins and the St. Petersburg police are doing downtown. An entertainment venue the size of BayWalk needs security. The Police Department's quick response to the needs and concerns of citizens who are now starting to come back downtown is welcome and needed.

Whether your tastes bring you to Jannus Landing, BayWalk or the Coliseum, all are welcome. And the diversity of the crowds is what makes St. Petersburg a destination worth visiting. Keep up the good work.

Take time to enjoy life, beauty

What has happened to the American people again? Everyone is in a hurry, pulling around you to get to the traffic light one car ahead. They are hurrying for that parking space and almost causing an accident or hitting someone crossing the parking lot. Heaven forbid that you would stop and let someone turn in front of you or come out a side street and be in front of you.

Do we need another 9/11 to make people again remember that life is precious? That it makes no difference if you are first or second at the light, you still have to sit and wait the same amount of time. If you see someone trying to reach an item that is just out of reach, offer to help. The extra second that it takes may be exactly the gesture that someone needs to brighten their day. Take time to enjoy life and the beauty around you. Life is much too short to ignore, and maybe the rule that we should all live by is: Treat everyone the same way you want to be treated.

Don't talk down to senior citizens

As an alert, interested-in-life senior citizen of 90, I feel I must write in order to point out the general attitude shown to all people of advanced age: much too judgmental!

Granted, there are, unfortunately, many people a great deal younger who are handicapped either by illness, lack of education or physical frailty. However, I feel a great majority of older people are as functional as many younger ones and should, therefore, not be categorized as incompetent.

It is very insulting, as a former professional, to be talked down to by many just because of age. We are capable of living as normal a life as a younger person.
