Ocala Civic Theatre will present an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and an off-beat comedy which tries to answer the question "does crime pay?"

Up first is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with music by Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The play runs Jan. 23 through Feb. 16.

In this tale taken from the Old Testament, Joseph is sold into slavery by his 11 brothers, who are consumed with jealousy and anger over their father's show of favoritism in giving young Joseph a "coat of many colors."

The musical parable follows Joseph's adventures into Egypt with a musical score which features country-western, rock and roll, calypso and many different dance styles.

Tickets for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat go on sale Jan. 13 and cost $17 for adults and $8 for full-time students. Curtain times are 8:15 p.m. for evening performances and 2:15 p.m. for matinees. Call the box office at (352) 236-2274.

The comedy Flaming Idiots runs Feb. 20 through Feb. 23. The play focuses on two characters, Carl and Phil, who recently opened a gourmet health food restaurant. After a while, their business begins to sink, and they need something flashy to bring in customers.

Discovering that big money awaits people with entrepreneurial vision, they decide to climb the ladder of success. Zippy's, a popular cross-town spot, has been crowded ever since Cy Manamalancia, a notorious mobster, was shot at that establishment. This leads them to plan a big-time hit that will bring glory and riches to their eatery.

Tickets for Flaming Idiots go on sale Jan. 27 and cost $14 for adults and $7 for full-time students. Call the box office at (352) 236-2274.

Ocala Civic Theatre is at 4337 East Silver Springs Boulevard in the Appleton Cultural Complex.
