Players questioned in sex complaint
By GRAHAM BRINK, Times Staff Writer
TAMPA -- Local detectives questioned two players from the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team Friday morning in connection with sexual battery allegations made by two women. No one was arrested, and the players were allowed to practice at the St. Pete Times Forum as scheduled Friday morning. They later left town for the Thrashers night game in Long Island, N.Y. "When interviewing all sides of the case there was some cloudiness in the circumstances," said Tampa police spokeswoman Katie Hughes. "The players are innocent as far as we are concerned, as the circumstances are right now." Neither the team nor the Tampa Police Department released the names of the players or the women involved. Hughes said detectives were called to an apartment complex in the Channelside area of downtown just after 6 a.m. Friday. They questioned the players and the women about the allegations and found "serious discrepancies" in the various stories, Hughes said. She would not elaborate. The detectives did not expect to arrest the players, but the case remains open, Hughes said. -- Times staff writer Damian Cristodero contributed to this report.
