Free seminars for homeowners groups

Two free conferences on community association operations are offered this month.
The law firm of Becker & Poliakoff, which specializes in community association law, will hold its annual free Community Association Leadership Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 18 at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road in Clearwater.
The conference is aimed at those who live in or manage condos, co-ops and homeowner associations. It qualifies for continuing-education credit for managers.
The conference opens with registration and continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. From 9:05 to 9:40 a.m., speakers will review case decisions and arbitration decisions affecting common-ownership housing communities.
From 9:55 to 10:35 a.m. will be an update on changes in state law.
From 11 to 11:50 a.m. the topic is "Anatomy of a Construction Project," including defining the project, maintenance versus alteration, preparing bid specifications, using independent engineers, drafting the contract and funding the project.
Those seeking continuing-education credit will take an exam from 12:10 to 1 p.m.

To register, call the Largo office of Becker & Poliakoff at (727) 559-0588.On Jan. 30, the Community Associations Institute will offer a free course on condo association operations from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 30 at the Best Western Clearwater Central Conference Center, 21338 U.S. 19 N in Clearwater.
The course will focus on association responsibilities, self-management, the bidding process for outside service providers, maintenance issues, accounting and legal services, and planning and conducting board meetings.
The Community Associations Institute is a nonprofit organization that offers information for residents, managers and service providers of condos, co-ops and homeowner associations.
