TAMPA -- Durant saved Hillsborough County schools from being shut out Saturday.

In a game delayed 35 minutes because Auburndale arrived late, Durant got 17 points from R.L. Bond in a 44-39 victory.

It was the only victory by a Hillsborough team in the four-game event. In other action, Lake Howell defeated Gaither 67-55, Kathleen beat Tampa Catholic 76-38 and lost to Brandon Pendleton Academy 81-71.

Durant (10-5) took advantage of Auburndale's sluggish start. An 11-2 run in the final five minutes of the first half gave the Cougars a 25-14 lead, and Bond made it stand by scoring 13 in second half.

Auburndale (7-10), which only had about 10 minutes to warm up once it arrived at the gym, shot 28 percent and committed 18 turnovers.

The Bloodhounds pulled to within five with 32 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Kendrick Johnson, but missed their final five shots.

Kerry Guy scored his 11 in the first half for Durant. Johnson led Auburndale with 11 points.

Gaither never recovered from a 13-0 run by Lake Howell in the third after the Cowboys had taken a 29-28 lead. Gaither pulled to within 56-50 on three free throws by Anthonio Russell with three minutes left.

But a 3-pointer by Pat Calathes put Lake Howell back up by nine moments later.

Brandon Harrison led Gaither with 20 points and Russell added 15. Lake Howell was paced by David Edwards' 17 points and 14 by Calathes.

Kathleen had too much firepower for Tampa Catholic. Chris Richard led the Red Devils with 13 points. Anthony Messina led Tampa Catholic with nine.

Pendleton used balanced scoring to beat Brandon. Danny Morrissey had 18 points, Tory Green 17, and Jermaine Bell and Ramel Bradley each added 13. Zaronn Cann scored a game-high 23 for Brandon.
