Patricia Hoffman, 52, Palm Harbor

Hoffman, a retired nurse, won a gold medal in the 5K run, and five golds and a silver in swimming last week at the Florida Senior Games in Kissimmee. Hoffman's time of 23:00 in the 5K run was a personal best. Hoffman will represent Florida in the Summer National Senior Games on May 26 in Hampton Roads, Va.

Mindy Zavesky, 15, Weeki Wachee

Zavesky earns the nickname "Mighty Mouse" every time she competes for Central High's girls weightlifting team. At 4 feet little and 97 pounds, she is far from the image of the conventional competitive lifter. She still looks a lot like the gymnast she was for nearly four years but is a giant in the 100-pound weight class. The freshman helped Central win a county championship Wednesday when she bench-pressed 85 pounds (can you bench 88 percent of your weight?) and clean 105 to win her class.

Janet Okogbaa, 15, Tampa

Okogbaa, a middle hitter at Berkeley Prep, was named the national freshman high school volleyball player of the year by She finished the season with a hitting percentage of .534, leading the Bucs to the state championship game. In what was perhaps her best match of the year, Okogbaa recorded 13 kills in 18 attempts with no errors and five blocks in two games against Gainesville P.K. Yonge.
