TEXARKANA, Texas -- Durwood Merrill, an AL umpire for 23 years who worked the 1988 World Series, died Saturday at 64.

He died of complications from a heart attack on Sunday.

Merrill retired in 1999. He umpired several AL championship series and the 1996 division series.

TRADE: Left-hander Mark Redman went from Detroit to Florida in a five-player deal. The Marlins dealt righty Gary Knotts and minor-league lefties Nate Robertson and Rob Henkel for Redman and minor-league righty Jason Fuell.

LAWSUIT: The Virginia Supreme Court rejected an appeal by a woman hit by a foul ball at a minor-league game, ruling that fans assume the risk of injury. The court turned down an appeal filed by Donna P. Thurmond, whose suit against Single-A Prince William (now called Potomac) also was rejected by a lower court.
