Tips sought in shooting death of teenBy BRADY DENNIS, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published January 15, 2003 TAMPA -- Investigators are searching for whoever killed 17-year-old John Perez with a single shot early Monday morning. Perez arrived home shortly after 2 a.m. and called to his grandmother, who was in a back bedroom, police reports stated. When she came out, she found her grandson on the floor in the front room, shot. Tampa police spokeswoman Katie Hughes said the bullet passed through his arm and pierced his torso, striking several vital organs. Perez was pronounced dead at the scene. The grandmother alerted neighbors by banging on an inside wall of the duplex. A neighbor told police he went outside and saw a man briskly walking away from the home at 8426-A N Semmes St. He described the man as black, about 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10, with a heavy build and wearing a dark-colored ball cap and a tan sweater or jacket. Hughes said police have no evidence the man was involved in the slaying, but they want to interview him. So far, leads appear short. "It's an open investigation," Hughes said. "It's ongoing." No one answered the door at the cinder-block home Tuesday evening. Several vases with fresh flowers sat outside the front door. Police ask that anyone with information about the shooting call homicide Detective Gene Black at (813)276-3220, the Tampa police station at (813) 231-6130 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
