County picks a new skate park partner

DADE CITY -- Pasco County commissioners on Tuesday agreed unanimously to open discussions with Zephyrhills officials about sharing the cost of a skateboard park in Zephyrhills.

Assistant County Administrator Dan Johnson told county commissioners earlier discussions on sharing the cost with Dade City and building a skate park there dissolved amid confusion over Dade City's willingness to back $892 county recreation impact fees for new construction.

Johnson also said the proposed sites for a permanent Dade City park were not acceptable. One proposed site, at Watson Park, might be too far from downtown. Another, near retention areas north of the courthouse, is actually on an old landfill and would pose costly construction problems, Johnson said.

Instead, Johnson proposed working with Zephyrhills to build the skateboard park there, possibly near Krusen Field or the public swimming pool. Commissioners agreed.

Dade City has a temporary skateboard park adjacent to City Hall, and Dade City's Sunrise Rotary Club has committed to helping build a permanent park in Dade City.
