Elks show hospitalized veterans they care

published January 15, 2003

Holiday cheer came to patients at the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines through the efforts of the exalted ruler, Iwan Choronenko, and the generosity of members of Holiday Isles Elks Lodge 1912.

As chairman of the National Veterans' Service, I delivered items collected by the Veterans Affairs volunteer contribution section; the generosity of members was beyond comprehension.

A box placed in the lodge collected dental supplies, hair and body grooming lotions, shaving creams, etc. These items were sorted, placed in separate sacks and delivered.

Members also contributed 21 beautiful lap blankets before Christmas.

Members should be congratulated for their response to the holiday collection; the collection box had to be emptied on several occasions. This should be noted as coming from the wonderful work of Elkdom.

According to the Bay Pines staff, the comfort items and blankets were deeply appreciated by the veterans who are patients there.
