Gulfport/South Pasadena election watch

GULFPORT

Seats up for election March 4: City Council seats (Ward 2 and Ward 4).

Two candidates have qualified to run:

-- Dawn Fisher, 69, 5214 Gulfport Blvd. S, for Ward 2.

-- Larry Cooper, 53, 5053 Jersey Ave. S, for Ward 4.

Two other candidate have picked up candidate packets but not officially qualified:

-- Mark Epstein, 54, for Ward 2.

-- Mary Stull, 59, for Ward 4.

Candidate materials are available at City Hall, 2401 53rd St. S.

The qualifying will continue until noon Friday.

The system: City Council members serve two-year terms. Candidates for City Council run for seats representing individual districts, or wards, in Gulfport, but voters citywide vote for each council seat.

Referendums: Registered voters who live in the Horan Way S/Premier Drive S area, between 59th and 61st streets, will decide whether they want their neighborhood to annex into Gulfport.

Also, a special meeting is scheduled 7 p.m. Thursday. City Council members will consider a referendum on eliminating run-off elections.

SOUTH PASADENA

Seats up for election March 4: Two City Commission seats.

Three candidates have qualified to run:

-- Incumbent Carol Clark, 63, 1898 Shore Drive, No. 104.

-- Robert Daugherty, 66, 7300 Sun Island Drive, No. 1804.

-- Incumbent Joan Runyon, 65, 7979 Sailboat Key Blvd., No. 408.

One person has picked up necessary paperwork to run but has not yet qualified:

-- Alex Haak, 70, 1375 Pasadena Ave, No. 617.

Qualifying continues through noon Friday. Candidate materials are available at City Hall, 7047 Sunset Drive S.

The system: Candidates are elected citywide. All commission candidates run against each other for three-year terms, and the top two vote-getters win the seats.
