CLEARWATER -- Two men who police say sexually assaulted a woman on Cleveland Street in July have been sentenced.

Troy E. Gilmore and Oscar A. Fernandez, both 25, were arrested in connection with the assault but were charged with different crimes. Fernandez initially was charged with battery with sexual overtones, though that later was reduced to battery.

Gilmore initially was charged with sexual battery, though that charge later was reduced to felony battery.

Clearwater police said the pair were assaulting the woman in the 1300 block of Cleveland Street but stopped when officers and paramedics saw them and approached.

Fernandez pleaded guilty to the battery charge in September and was sentenced to a year probation. Gilmore pleaded guilty Tuesday to the felony battery charge. He was sentenced to 173 days in jail, which he had already served after his arrest.

Civilian of the Month is Mary Kortvely, who works in the department's communications center and helped sort out a 911 call for medical help in December.

Volunteer of the month is Darcy Dunevant, who coordinated Project Heartstrings, which provided toys, food and clothing to Largo families during the holiday season.
