Corey Jane Holt is a key player
Corey Jane Holt is a familiar name to anyone who has been following the Tampa Bay area music scene for the past decade. Holt first made a splash as the kicky keyboardist for the pop band Clang. She was a principal player in forming the acclaimed Bonk Festival of New Music held in Tampa and St. Petersburg every March and is the festival's resident pianist. Holt also did tenure in alt-rock band Alameda and played guitar for the all-chick act the Great Big New Ones.
Holt's forte, however, is piano, of the hoity-toity and arty variety. She has recently released Unmistakably Modern, her first stellar solo piano album. It's filled with Holt's fresh interpretations of compositions, some featuring avant-garde fixin's and electronic tape loops, from notable composers including the Tampa Bay area's own Robert Constable, David W. Rogers and Holt's former Clang-mate Paul Reller. (The disc also features compositions from national and international composers.)
Holt present the disc's material at 8 p.m. Friday at the University of South Florida Music Recital Hall, 4202 E Fowler Ave. Also on the bill: several pieces performed by Confluences, a cutting edge ensemble featuring Holt, Jay Coble on trumpet and Tom Brantley on trombone. Admission is free.
