Pasco: This weekBy Times staff© St. Petersburg Times published January 17, 2003 STORYTELLER/SINGER KIJANA WISEMAN will present "'The Changing Faces in Popular American Culture" in the persona of the North African character The Griot, at 10 a.m. today at the PHCC Performing Arts Center in New Port Richey and at 7 p.m. today at the North Campus Multipurpose Room on the PHCC campus off U.S. 98 northwest of downtown Brooksville. Ms. Wiseman uses songs, stories, slides, comedy characterization, costume changes and audience participation in her one-hour performances. The show is part of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture Series at PHCC. "GYPSY,' A MUSICAL, continues weekends through Feb. 2 at Richey Suncoast Theatre, 6237 Grand Blvd., New Port Richey. Lewis will have a show and sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Waterfront Park Pavilion, Old Post Road, north of Grand Boulevard, Port Richey (turn west off U.S. 19 at the Hess station, go to the end of the road, turn north). Lewis will autograph prints and note cards at 10 a.m. and demonstrate his painting techniques throughout the day. There will be question-and-answer sessions and short lectures from time to time by the artist and by his son and manager, R.L. Lewis III. IMPRESSIONIST MARK RALSTON will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at New Port Richey Elks Lodge, 7201 Congress St., New Port Richey. Ralston has performed at Opryland, Busch Gardens and Walt Disney World. His impressions include Neil Diamond, Aerosmith, Joe Cocker, Elvis, Ray Charles, Randy Travis and Willie Nelson. SUNCOAST SHIP MODELERS' exhibit, "The Craft of the Shipbuilder," continues through Feb. 3 at the Alric C.T. The exhibit includes models of sailing vessels from the 17th and 18th centuries, modern sailing schooners, fishboats, working tug boats, paddle wheel riverboats and speedboats and "ships in a bottle" miniatures, miniature working steam engines and nautical dioramas. ORAL APPRAISALS OF ANTIQUES and collectibles will be given by qualified appraisers at the Pasco County Fine Arts Council's Antique Appraisal Fest at the Armory on Live Oak Ave (between Fourth and Fifth streets) in Dade City from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Each visitor may have up to three easily carried items appraised for $5 apiece. Tickets for appraisals will be sold starting at 9:45 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m. The appraisers will evaluate paintings, sculptures, prints, American and European china, porcelain and glassware, jewelry, antique weaponry (unloaded, please), dolls, toys, silver, enamels and small furniture pieces. RICHEY COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA will present the "Big Band Dinner Concert" on Sunday at Spartan Manor, Massachusetts Avenue, New Port Richey. Guest performer is jazz singer Katt Hefner, doing songs made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and Billie Holiday. Guest conductor is Bob Boyd. THE FLORIDA ORCHESTRA will perform "Nature: A Symphony of Sounds" at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Center for the Arts at River Ridge, Town Center Road, New Port Richey. The program includes Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Pastoral by Beethoven; Vivaldi's Concerto for Flute in D Major, Goldfinch; and excerpts from Ferde Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite. Conductor will be Susan Haig, the music director of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and has conducted the Detroit, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Vancouver and Toronto symphony orchestras. LOOK AHEADCENTENNIAL OPERA GROUP will present a video of Andre Previn's operatic version of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at Centennial Library, 5740 Moog Road, Holiday (1.2 miles east of U.S. 19). Soprano Renee Fleming plays the sexually frustrated Blanche DuBois, with Rodney Gilfry as Stanley Kowalski and Elizabeth Futral as Stella, Stanley's wife and Blanche's sister. Libretto is by Philip Litell. The work was commissioned and staged by the San Francisco Opera and first presented in 1998. Admission is free. TRUMPETS AND KEYBOARDS, an evening of baroque and 20th century music, will be presented at 7;30 p.m. Jan. 24 at The Presbyterian Church of Seven Springs, 4651 Little Road, New Port Richey. Performers are Bernard Sanchez and Scott Thornburg on trumpets, Barbara Gossard on organ and Sally Page on piano. The program includes a jazz piece specially composed for the performers.
