GAINESVILLE -- Brandon remained undefeated Saturday with a victory in the Domino's Invitational Tournament, which was a combination of pool dual and individual competition.
The tournament started with pool dual matches and ended with singles competition among the top six wrestlers in each weight class. Brandon beat Fort Myers, Clay County and Gainesville in pool competition. In the second pool, Sickles beat Orange Park, Lake City Columbia and Tallahassee Lincoln before eventually losing to Miami Southridge. An undefeated record in dual matches and 11 individual champions gave the Eagles 334.5 points and the overall title. Southridge was second with 189, followed by Clay County (175.5) and Sickles (162).
With dual matches stopped after pool competition and Miami Southridge in another pool, Brandon did not get an opportunity to wrestle one of the state's top programs. However, in the individual championship rounds, Eagles and Trojans collided in tough matches at 103, 112 and 152 pounds. Brandon won all three.
Brandon's champions included Alejandro Figueroa (103), John Santana (112), Cesar Grajales (119), Khalid Andwele (125), Ryan Joyce (130), Eddie Hutchinson (135), Tommy Hutchinson (140), David Craig (145), Rocky Cozart (152), Matt Juncal (189) and Rashard Golf (215).
"I thought we did really well, coming off the Brandon duals," Eagles coach Russ Cozart said. "Alejandro, Eddie Hutchinson, John Santana and Rocky all beat some excellent wrestlers. Rocky beat a state champ from Clay County.
"We had great performances from everybody tonight."
