Considering buying a video or computer game? The Entertainment Software Rating Board, a self-regulatory organization for the software industry, provides guidance for purchasers with its letter ratings system:

Early Childhood

Suitable for ages 3 and older and contains no material parents would find inappropriate.

Everyone

Suitable for ages 6 and older, but may include minimal violence, some comic mischief, such as slapstick comedy, or some crude language. (Replaced K-A: Kids to Adults in 1998.)

Teen

Suitable for ages 13 and older, but may include violent content, mild or strong language and suggestive themes.

Mature

Suitable for ages 17 and older, but may include more intense violence or language than products in the Teen category. May also include mature sexual themes.

Adults Only

Suitable only for adults. May include graphic depictions of sex and violence. Adults Only products are not intended to be sold or rented to those under age 18.

Rating Pending

The software has been submitted to the ratings board, but has not received a final rating.
