ST. PETERSBURG -- The Devil Rays signed left-handed pitcher Jim Parque and outfielder Ryan Thompson to minor-league contracts with invitations to major-league spring training.

Parque, 27, was 1-4 with a 9.95 ERA in eight games for the White Sox last season. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Charlotte recovering from 2001 shoulder surgery. He has a 30-33 major-league record over five seasons with the White Sox.

Thompson, 35, split last season between the Brewers and Triple-A Indianapolis. He is a career .243 hitter in 416 major-league games with 52 homers and 176 RBIs.

CARDINALS: Right-hander Dustin Hermanson returned to the team after agreeing to a $900,000 one-year contract and is expected to compete for a starting spot. He was 14-13 with the Cardinals in 2001 but was traded to the Red Sox to clear salary for the signing of Tino Martinez.

WHITE SOX: Tom Gordon agreed to a $1.4-million, one-year contract after a 2002 season that was cut short by a muscle tear in his right shoulder.
