Last week, we invited reader feedback to an Elijah Gosier column that suggested Black History Month is a good idea whose time has passed. One response stood out because it came from a child, and children have been the main focus of Black History Month teaching. Hi, my name is Michelle Methot, and I am 12 years old. I am being homeschooled for the first time this year for seventh grade. I have been doing a lot of reading of newspaper articles and writing about them, and this one caught my eye. I agree with you because I believe that our country always describes itself as one, and we work together. If that is true, then I believe that every day should be American history. Because blacks are just as American as whites. Color has no effect on the way that I look at people.
I am a dancer, and this year I was in the Chocolate Nutcracker, and it is the most amazing performance that I had ever been involved in, and it taught me a lot because it showed me how talented black people are. The jazz and hip-hop is amazing, and there is nothing they couldn't do. I admired that. I just think that people are people and there is nothing different about us, and I don't understand how some can't see it. Thank you for reading this.
