Sgt. Maj. Tony H. Purdy, son of Elizabeth Leshore and John Purdy of St. Petersburg, was promoted recently to his current rank. He joined the Army in 1979. His duty positions have included squad leader, drill sergeant, air defense artillery observer controller at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif., and battery first sergeant at Ansbach, Germany, and Fort Bliss, Texas. His awards and decorations include the Army Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with 10 oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal (eighth award), Unit Award, Army Drivers Badge and the Army Drill Sergeant Badge.

Purdy is a 1977 graduate of Boca Ciega High School.

Pvt. Shawn Leitner, son of Larry and Patti Leitner of St. Petersburg, has graduated from Army boot camp at Fort Sill, Okla. He will be stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., for advanced individual training in heavy equipment repair. He attended Northeast High School.
