BROOKSVILLE -- The Brooksville Woman's Club hopes it will be the little things that help the organization achieve its big goals.

On Feb. 8, the group will play host to a sale of collectible dolls, miniature houses and toy bears at the Hernando County Fairgrounds to help raise money for renovations to its 82-year-old clubhouse.

"We try and encourage people to come out and support us," said club member Cherry Stettin, who is organizing the fundraiser. "(The clubhouse) is a big part of Brooksville's history."

The woman's club was federated in 1910, Stettin said, and sponsors fundraisers throughout the year for charities, scholarships and its building fund. Some recent events have included a Victorian tea and card parties.

"We thought the miniatures and dolls would be something that would appeal to our audience," Stettin said.

In refurbishing the building, Stettin said, the group will begin at the top, using money from its first grant to repair the tin roof -- a $16,000 project. Future repairs will include the walls, ceiling, windows and the lighting. When work is complete, an attempt will be made to place the clubhouse on the National Register of Historic Places.

"It's a very exciting idea for all of us," she said. "And it's never too early for people to start Christmas shopping."

Vendors selling antique and collectible dolls, miniatures and bears will come from as far as Indiana, Stettin said, and will have a large variety of merchandise.

The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 8 at the fairgrounds on U.S. 41, on the south side of Brooksville. Admission is $4 for adults; $3 for children younger than 12. For information, call 799-3801 or 796-4814.
