Sick Khabibulin sits out again

TAMPA -- Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin's stuffed-up nose spared coach John Tortorella a difficult decision. But there's always next week.
Backup John Grahame, riding a three-game win streak, started his second straight game Thursday and delivered his fourth consecutive victory. It marked the first time Khabibulin sat consecutive games other than the games before and after the 2002 Olympic break.
Khabibulin is winless in his past six starts. He has one win in his past 10 with an .881 save percentage. Grahame, who beat three top teams in the Senators, Stars and Flyers, is making a bid for more playing time.
"I think that's healthy," Tortorella said. "I try to throw the ball in the players' court as much as you can and let them run with it or lose it. John puts us in a position where decisions have to be made."
Khabibulin did not skate Thursday morning because he did not feel well but was in uniform for the game and plans to start for the East in Sunday's All-Star Game.
"Sometimes, when things are not going well, you start questioning yourself," Khabibulin said. "I know I'm fit. I know what I'm capable of doing. I just have to work through it."
Grahame, who made his fifth start since being acquired Jan. 13 from Boston, said Khabibulin has gone out of his way to help.
"There's no tension at all," Grahame said. "Everybody knows Nik is a big contributor. He's been a mainstay and kind of turned this program around with his world-class goaltending ability. Just the little bit I've been here, I've learned from him. I'm just here to contribute when it's my turn to play."
QUOTABLE: "I'm petrified something freaky will happen. It's a tremendous feather in their caps. ... But I want our athletes coming in after this break ready to play against Washington." -- Tortorella on Khabibulin, Martin St. Louis and Vinny Lecavalier possibly getting hurt at the All-Star Game.
'CANE INJURED: Carolina left wing Erik Cole broke a bone in his lower left leg. He landed awkwardly after a check by Dan Boyle in the second period.
ODDS AND ENDS: Vinny Prospal extended his point-scoring streak to six games with an assist. ... Carolina goalie Kevin Weekes, who spent two seasons with the Lightning, lost his eighth consecutive decision. ... Defenseman Stan Neckar and right wing Ben Clymer (groins) did not play. ... Right wing Jimmie Olvestad was a healthy scratch. ... Tickets for March and April home games go on sale at 10 a.m. today.
