Growth inches north of SR 54By Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published January 31, 2003 LAND O'LAKES -- A second housing development was about to break ground this week on a 5-mile strip of State Road 54 between the Suncoast Parkway and U.S. 41. Mindful of the success of the Oakstead community, which sold about 260 lots last year and also is close to the parkway, Cordoba Cos. expects to start a 330-home project named Suncoast Pointe. The community's exclusive builder will be Maronda Homes, which typically builds houses of about $120,000 for "first-time and move up" buyers, Cordoba president Lance Ponton said. Suncoast Pointe is the second development, after Oakstead, to start chewing the soil north of SR 54, where corporations such as Lennar and U.S. Home have plans to build about 8,000 homes. Suncoast Pointe is just east of the parkway, a toll road that zips drivers straight to Tampa International Airport and north into Hernando and Citrus counties. "You can pull up in front of the terminal at one of the airlines in 21 minutes," Ponton said. Another of Ponton's Pasco projects is a planned 60 to 70 homes on 41 acres west of U.S. 41. It shares a lake with the upscale Sunset Lakes neighborhood. He also develops lots north of State Road 52 in Quail Ridge. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
