McMillen sets county scoring mark

When it came down to it, when the moment was at hand and the Pinellas County boys basketball all-time scoring record was within range, Gabe McMillen did what he does best.

He took aim from 5 feet behind the 3-point line.

And swished it.

On his way to a school-record eight 3-pointers, McMillen passed former Keswick Christian standout Mykel deVega's county record of 2,595 career points and led Indian Rocks to an 80-43 win over Calvary Christian Thursday night.

In 1998, deVega set the record in a win over Seminole Presbyterian. The previous mark of 2,391 was set by Dixie Hollins' Dametri Hill, which remains the recognized public school record.

deVega played in eighth grade, leading some to dismiss his record. McMillen also played in eighth grade, scoring 107 points. But he has said all along his objective is to better deVega's mark without his eighth-grade numbers, something he should do with seven regular-season games remaining.

McMillen, averaging 20.7 points, finished with 30 in his record-setting performance.
