Mild weather finally has brought some relief for Suncoast anglers.

Inshore winter staples like red drum and trout are taking advantage of nature's reprieve and moving into the shallows.

The north winds that dominate the winter weather pattern result in lower tidal phases. Inshore species move into shallow areas on clear, calm days to warm themselves in the sun, and often will feed aggressively when given an opportunity.

Light spinning tackle and select shrimp should work for almost any species. Tail-hooking the shrimp allows longer casts and helps keep the bait out of the weeds.

Focus on the potholes, subtle channels and prop scars that are abundant on the grass flats. Though the difference in depth may be only a few inches, these areas often hold a lot of fish.

Fish are easily spooked in the shallow water, so use a pole to position a shallow drafting boat within casting range. Wading is probably the most practical approach.

Cast to the outside edges to keep from spooking the fish. Casting past your target and slowly reeling back to the desired area allows bait to be placed with quiet precision.
