See doggies dive -- and jump
The Purina Dog Chow Incredible Dog Challenge returns to St. Petersburg this weekend after a year's absence, allowing dog lovers to see the canine Olympics as local dogs try to earn a spot in the regional and national dog challenge.
Dogs compete in agility courses, high jump, flying disc, swimming, diving and more. Buck, the chocolate lab shown here, was practicing for the dog dive, a doggie version of the long jump, for the 2000 competition in St. Petersburg.
Local dogs can compete in the dive and freestyle flying disc competitions from 10 a.m. to noon Friday. Those that qualify earn a spot in Saturday's finals. Locals also can participate in a training camp in agility and flying disc from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday. (Registration is at 2 p.m.)
The Eastern Regional Finals begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and run until 4 p.m. The event is free for spectators. All activities are at Spa Beach Park, Second Avenue NE at the waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg. Call toll-free 1-800-229-4758 or www.dogchow.com.
