Bulls still seeking a road win

MEMPHIS -- The road woes continued for South Florida as the Bulls fell to 0-9 away from Tampa and dropped their ninth straight overall, 76-53 to Memphis on Friday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Tamika Butler scored a career-high 18 for the Tigers (10-11, 3-5 C-USA), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Shannon Hamp had 12 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double double of the season.

Aiya Shepard had 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting for the Bulls (5-15, 0-7). Sarah Lochmann followed with nine and Sonia Cotton and Alana Tanksley added seven each.

With the score tied at 10 with 11:03 left in the first half, Hamp and Butler combined to spark a 9-0 run that gave Memphis the lead for good. Hamp had the first four points of the run, and Butler capped it with the Tigers' first 3-pointer of the night.

Poor free-throw shooting plagued USF, which went 1-of-10 from the line in the first half and 10-of-24 overall. Memphis went 15-of-21.

The Tigers shot 46.8 percent to 40 percent for USF and outrebounded the Bulls 43-31.

NO. 7 UNC 66, N.C. STATE 63: Leah Metcalf stole a pass and converted a three-point play with 57.2 seconds left to help the visiting Tar Heels rally from a 10-point second-half deficit.

Coretta Brown and La'Tangela Atkinson scored 14 each to lead North Carolina, which has won five straight. Metcalf had 13 points.

Amelia Labador had a career-high 20 points for N.C. State, which has lost four in a row. Carisse Moody added 14.

Men

MORRIS BROWN 65, B-CC 63: Anthony Adams scored 17 and Stephen Walton hit two clinching free throws for the host Wolverines. Richard Toussaint had 26 points a game after scoring 40 in a win over North Carolina A&T, and Maurice Riddick added 25, including 8 of 16 3-pointers, for the Wildcats.

FAU 83, CAMPBELL 56: Avery Headley scored a career-high 20 and grabbed 12 rebounds as the host Owls won their second straight after dropping 13 of their previous 14.

IOWA STATE: Federal authorities are conducting an investigation that involves assistant coach Randall Brown, university officials said. The investigation does not involve the program, members of the team or other members of the staff, school spokesman John McCarroll said. Federal authorities asked the university not to comment on the investigation, McCarroll said.

Late Thursday

NO. 2 ARIZONA 88, WASH. 85 (OT): The roller coaster is rumbling along for the Wildcats.

Salim Stoudamire scored 25, including a huge 3-pointer in overtime, and Channing Frye had 24 points and 12 rebounds as visiting Arizona survived a scare.

It was another chapter in a mercurial season for the Wildcats, who erased a 20-point deficit to win at Kansas two weeks ago, followed with a home loss to Stanford last week and rebounded to beat California two days later.

"It's a little frustrating how the season is going," said Luke Walton, who scored 13. "We're supposed to be one of the best teams around. We seem to only play great in spurts."

The Wildcats beat the Cougars for the 12th time in the past 13 meetings, but they had to sweat it out in front of a capacity crowd of 10,028 raucous fans eager for an upset.

After Bobby Jones hit two free throws to give Washington an 84-82 lead with 1:35 left in overtime, Stoudamire swished a 3-pointer that put the Wildcats ahead for good with 1:18 remaining.

"I don't want to talk about what I did," Stoudamire said. "I'm disappointed with how we played. To tell you the truth, we got lucky. Washington should have won that game."

Washington's 5-foot-8 Nate Robinson hit a dramatic scoop in the lane over the 6-9 Rick Anderson to tie it at 78 at the end of regulation.
