The long goodbye ...

By ERIC DEGGANS and Associated Press

Call it the ultimate bait and switch: Pretend Evan Marriott's final choice was not revealed in Monday's edition of Joe Millionaire -- despite the fact that Marriott, a construction worker who has told the women on the show he has inherited $50-million, had narrowed his choice to two finalists last week.

Instead, viewers Monday watched Marriott schmooze standoffish Kristin Davis lookalike Zora Andrich and golddigging former fetish video queen Sarah Kozer on a confusing montage of dates that included an after-hours visit from Kozer. Viewers were encouraged to tune in next Monday for the show's two-hour finale, in which Marriott supposedly chooses a final winner, tells her he's a heavy equipment operator and hands her a "friendship" ring provided by the Fox network. Glib butler Paul Hogan also promised a "rather big, surprising and remarkable twist" at the show's end (rumors abound that Marriott really is rich).

We can only hope that one of the duped women surprises Marriott with a right cross to the kisser.

Dude, yer gettin' arrested!

The actor who gained fame and a cult following as the slacker "Steven" in commercials for Dell computers was arrested buying a small bag of marijuana, police said.

Benjamin Curtis, 22, was arraigned Monday in New York on a misdemeanor drug possession charge after officers said they saw him buy marijuana Sunday night. Criminal Court Judge Ellen Coin advised Curtis that his case will be dismissed, and his record expunged, if he avoids arrest during the next year.

Venancio Figueroa, a Dell spokesman, said no decision has been made on Curtis' future promoting the company: "We are following the situation and really trying to understand what happened here."
