PHCC tennis team fills its last scholarship spot

NEW PORT RICHEY -- Athena Carroll has accepted the sixth and final athletic scholarship to round out the Pasco-Hernando Community College tennis team.

A freshman in her first semester, Carroll has played at the recreation level. She is a 2002 graduate of Faith Christian Temple High in the Bahamas.

"We're six and rolling right now," coach Brent Wellman said.

The Conquistadors were down to four players -- at least six are needed -- after Wellman learned in January that two players could not come out for the team. Alison Bruno accepted one of two scholarships offered last month.

"She's working real hard," Wellman said of Bruno, a 2000 Elfers Christian School graduate who had never played before. "The serve's really tough, but we'll get her into it."

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: On the same night Saint Leo honored orthopedic surgeon and Olympic softball hero Dr. Dot Richardson at its 10th annual Women In Sports banquet, seven student-athletes were recognized.

Recipients of $1,000 Sodexho Marriott scholarships Feb.6 were: Shannon Cummings, basketball; Amber Getz, cross country; Alexis Esquia, golf; Kimberly Ciliberto, soccer; Gina McKeon, softball; Jennifer Eigner, tennis; Rachel Yockey, volleyball.

Sophomore second baseman Denyve Duncan earned the Spirit award for her community activities. A leadoff batter who last year led the Lions with a .383 average, Duncan has organized a clothes drive for a domestic violence shelter, is involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and took a summer trip to the Dominican Republic to spread Christianity and play charity softball games.

Duncan, who has never hit a home run, was inspired by Richardson's speech on being a leader and having a passion for academics and athletics. Duncan vowed to hit one this season.

HOOP SPLITS: The Saint Leo men's basketball team (6-15, 2-8 SSC) rebounded from a 74-44 loss to Rollins with a 48-33 win over Barry last week, halting a seven-game losing streak. Colin Shaw scored 18 points against Rollins and 10 Saint Leo players scored in the Barry game.

The women's basketball team (11-12, 3-7) lost 72-56 to Rollins before defeating Barry 59-44. September Harrison and Ebony Winn each scored 13 points against Rollins. Harrison had 22 points and Winn 13 against Barry.
