Bulls pick Brinson to lead turnaround

VALRICO -- Bloomingdale didn't look any further than its math department to find its new head coach, Corey Brinson, who has served as a defensive assistant the past two years.

Brinson, a 29-year-old math teacher at the school, is the Bulls' seventh head coach since the school opened in 1987, a span without a winning season.

Bloomingdale has won five games the past five years, including an 0-10 campaign last season under coach David Bankston, who resigned for health reasons.

Bloomingdale athletic director Barry Davis said Brinson is the man to turn the Bulls in the right direction.

"He has the personality and the energy that's needed to be successful," Davis said. "The kids were very enthusiastic and excited about the announcement. I feel confident that he'll bring the team together."

Davis acknowledged that Brinson, a former defensive back at Bethune-Cookman College, has a tough task ahead, but said the new coach and the school are keeping a healthy perspective.

"The most important thing is to build a program that everyone can be proud of," Davis said.

"Get the team strong and competitive, and then the wins will come."
