Jared Frayer climbed one step on his Olympic ladder last weekend.

The former Countryside and University of Oklahoma wrestler won the 145.5-pound weight class at the Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament, held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament, named after the 1984 Olympic champion who was fatally shot seven years ago, had 14 world champions and top international stars in men's freestyle and Greco-Roman.

"This was a good tournament and a good title to get under my belt," said Frayer, who won in freestyle. "It was definitely the biggest international tournament that I've won. Everyone was tough, and I think I took myself to a higher level."

Frayer beat Doug Schwab, a former Iowa wrestler and NCAA champion, 8-7 in the final, scoring a two-point turn in the third period for the win.

Frayer finished the tournament 5-0. In pool play, he pinned Edison Hurtado from Colombia and recorded decisions over Prokopy Petrov from Russia and Cary Kolat, a 2000 U.S. Olympian. In the semifinals, Frayer beat Garndris Garzon 15-4 in 5 minutes, 41 seconds.

"All I tried to do was go out and get some wins," Frayer said. "I was able to do that and now I see myself as equal to some of these guys. It was a building block for the future."

Frayer's next tournament is in Cuba in two weeks.
