The eclectic Flecktones

Banjo pickin' Bela Fleck brings his Flecktones to play their zesty mix of bluegrass and jazz fusion. The band, which began more than a decade ago, plays the rootsy tunes with such gusto, you'd never know its leader was a city slicker -- yep, born in the Big Apple.

The Flecktones incorporate into their jamboree everything from Irish waltzes to African drumming to klezmer. The sound excites roots music lovers, the jam band crowd and world music aficionados.

Live, there are few acts out there more exciting than these guys. Come on, banjo and tabla? Together? Fun!

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones perform at 7:30 p.m. today at Tampa Theatre, 711 Franklin St. $31.50. (727) 898-2100 or (813) 287-8844.

Henry Rollins: here, there and everywhere

What to make of the ubiquitous Henry Rollins these days? Is Rollins, once the leader of California hard-core punks Black Flag, still an uncompromising underground icon?

Or is he a sellout?

Henry Rollins

Since Black Flag broke up in 1986, Renaissance man Rollins, who turns 42 today, went on to start his own publishing company, form the Rollins Band, perform at Woodstock '94, appear as a cultural and music commentator on MTV and VH-1, star in ads for Powerbook and the Gap, write a column for Details -- which chose him as its Man of the Year -- guest star on The Drew Carey Show, and do these here spoken word tours in which he rants and raves about current events.

Oh yeah, Rollins has also appeared in a slew of big budget feature films including Heat and other classics such as Jackass: The Movie and Bad Boys II. (Funny, you don't find members of other pioneer California punk bands Dead Kennedys, X and the Circle Jerks on the big screen.)

Did we mention that Rollins co-hosts Full Metal Challenge on TLC?

Can the Hank Rollins talk show be very far off?

You know, the signs were there all along: Rollins has the muscles, the military bark, the thick neck like the jock who hassled the kid with the mohawk and safety pins in high school.

Rollins may not be a frat boy, but he has become an industry unto himself, an entrepreneur. And that's as American as apple pie and the Gap.

Henry Rollins brings his Spoken Word Tour at 8 p.m. Saturday to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N W.C. MacInnes Place, Tampa. $22. (813) 229-7827.
