SUNRISE -- The Bruins' Mike Knuble set an NHL record for the fastest two goals in a game as Boston beat the Panthers 6-5 Friday night.

Knuble scored 10 seconds into the game and 17 seconds later. His first goal fell five seconds short of the NHL record, shared by Doug Smail of Winnipeg (1981), Bryan Trottier of the Islanders (1984) and Alexander Mogilny of the Sabres (1991).

"It was just one of those games," Knuble said. Brian Rolston scored 27 seconds into overtime, beating Roberto Luongo with a slap shot moments after he hit the post.

Florida rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the second period, but Boston sent the game to overtime when Glenn Murray beat Luongo on a one-timer with 9:12 left in regulation.

HURRICANES 3, CAPITALS 1: Craig Adams, Jan Hlavac and Jeff O'Neill scored, and Kevin Weekes snapped a personal 11-game losing streak in net for host Carolina.

Carolina broke a seven-game losing streak as Weekes stopped 30 of 31 shots.

O'Neill got his team-leading 21st goal with seven seconds left into an empty net.

Southeast Division-leading Washington is the second-highest scoring team in the East, but got one goal by Michael Nylander with 7:54 left after scoring five in the first period at Atlanta on Wednesday.

RANGERS 1, PENGUINS 0: Alexei Kovalev and Brian Leetch connected on a power-play goal in their first game as teammates in more than four years and Mike Dunham made 26 saves for host New York.

Leetch returned after missing 31 games with an injured ankle. Kovalev was acquired from Pittsburgh on Monday in an eight-player trade. He spent the first six years of his career in New York.

"You can't have a better day," said Kovalev, who blew kisses to the crowd.

Pittsburgh had killed off the first half of a two-man disadvantage when Tom Poti fired a shot that Kovalev got his stick on in the crease and deflected past Johan Hedberg 1:38 into the third period. Leetch assisted on Kovalev's 29th goal and second since rejoining the Rangers.

The Penguins recalled center Tomas Surovy from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL and placed center Martin Straka on injured reserve, retroactive to Sunday, because of a strained hamstring.

MIGHTY DUCKS 4, STARS 2: Alexei Smirnov scored the tiebreaking goal with 15:18 to play and Martin Gerber made 26 saves as visiting Anaheim got within 14 points of first-place Dallas in the Pacific Division.

Steve Rucchin added a third-period goal, and Paul Kariya had three assists for the Mighty Ducks, 7-1-0 in their last eight.

Adam Oates and Petr Sykora had second-period goals for the Mighty Ducks, who beat the Stars for the first time this season after two losses and a tie.

COYOTES 3, WILD 2: Daymond Langkow scored two goals, including the winner with 2:22 to play, as visiting Phoenix ended a four-game losing streak with its first win since the All-Star break.

Langkow rebounded Ladislav Nagy's shot and wristed the puck past Manny Fernandez's stick for the winner.

Zac Bierk and Brian Boucher combined for 26 saves for Phoenix. Bierk had 15 saves through the second period before leaving with a strained groin. Boucher made critical stops in the final six minutes.

The Wild recalled goaltender Frederic Cloutier from Houston of the AHL. Goalie Dwayne Roloson sprained his ankle Wednesday and is day to day.

SHARKS 4, BLACKHAWKS 2: Vincent Damphousse and Scott Thornton scored power-play goals 41 seconds apart late in the third period as visiting San Jose ended a four-game losing streak. Damphousse, who also had two assists, connected from 10 feet during a two-man advantage with 5:06 left to make it 3-2. Thornton made it 4-2 from the left edge of the crease during a power play with 4:25 remaining.

BLUES: Chris Pronger is making progress in his recovery from a severe wrist injury, but wouldn't speculate if he'll return for the playoffs. "I don't think I've sat out the whole year to rush myself back and get hurt again," he said.
