TAMPA -- Behind the strength of its middleweights, Jesuit captured the district title Friday, crowned nine champions and scored 262 points. The Tigers will send 12 of their 14 starters to the region tournament next weekend in Sebring.

Starting with Joe Aramini at 130 pounds and ending with Garrison Sanborn at 189, the Tigers racked up eight straight wins in the finals. The title points weren't needed for the team championship because the Tigers secured that honor during the semifinals.

Also winning titles for Jesuit were Addison Nelson (119 pounds), Alex Enriquez (135), T.J. Ferrante (140), Clayton Thomas (145), Adam Virgadono (152), Robert Bolles (160) and Alex Virgadono (171).

Jesuit coach Brett McGill was especially pleased with the number of district champions for the Tigers because it will give his team an advantage in the region tournament. In the first round in region competition, district champions are matched up with district fourth-place finishers, which usually means more team points. "Taking 12 to the regionals is great, and with all the champions we should make some good points in the first round," McGill said. "In this tournament, the kids did everything I wanted them to do. We went to some hard tournaments during the regular season and they got some losses, but it made them tough for our Class A state run."

Other county district champions included Sean Joyce (103) of Temple Heights, Joseph Christensen (112), Nathaniel Drummond (125) and Ettore Ewen (215) of Tampa Prep, and Shane Serafin (275) of Berkeley Prep.

Joyce, an eighth-grader, is one of the favorites to win an individual championship at the Class A state tournament in two weeks in Lakeland.

"I train hard all the time so I don't have to struggle to keep my weight down to 103, but I doubt I will stay at the lower weight next year as a freshman," Joyce said. "This tournament is a good preparation for next week at the regional tournament."

Following Jesuit were Berkeley Prep with 191.5 points, Robinson (151), Tampa Prep (137), Temple Heights (56.5), Freedom (54), Blake (50) and Tampa Catholic (39).
