STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut guard Ben Gordon, 19, was arrested Friday on charges he slapped a female student, who also was arrested for hitting him.

Gordon, the team's leading scorer, was released on $1,000 bond and traveled with the Huskies to Philadelphia for today's game against Villanova, assistant athletic director Kyle Muncy said. He will be allowed to play.

Gordon averages 20.1 points for the 23rd-ranked Huskies.

According to the police report, originally obtained by the Journal Inquirer of Manchester, Gordon was charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

The woman, who flagged down a campus police officer, had a bloody lip and was crying, police said. She was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct for hitting Gordon, who was not injured, police said.

GONZAGA: Forward Richard Fox, who averages 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds, likely will miss the rest of the regular season with a broken finger. The 6-foot-11, 275-pound junior hurt the ring finger on his nonshooting hand in the Bulldogs' 73-49 victory over Saint Mary's on Thursday. Head trainer Steve DeLong said Fox does not need surgery but will be sidelined at least 31/2 weeks.

KANSAS: Coach Roy Williams said injured forward Wayne Simien could return Sunday against Iowa State. The 6-9 sophomore, who was averaging 15.9 points and 8.7 rebounds, has missed 11 games since dislocating his shoulder Jan. 4.

Williams also denied Internet reports that he was interested in a job at UCLA because he and athletic director Al Bohl do not get along. Many speculate Steve Lavin's job with the Bruins is in jeopardy because of their 5-15 season.

MICHIGAN: University officials appeared before an NCAA infractions committee in Coral Gables for 41/2 hours to answer questions about the troubled program. A ruling is expected in 5-7 weeks. Michigan imposed sanctions on the program after a scandal involving former booster Ed Martin. The infractions committee will decide if the punishment was strong enough.

In addition to a one-year postseason ban, Michigan forfeited 112 regular-season and tournament victories from five seasons, plus its victory in the 1992 NCAA semifinal.

NORTH CAROLINA: Freshman Sean May, who broke a bone in his foot in December, was cleared for increased conditioning, but will not participate in contact drills. Tim Taft, UNC director of sports medicine, said he is uncertain when May, who averaged 12.1 points and 8.6 rebounds, could play again.

WESTERN NEW MEXICO: Former coach Joe Mondragon said he will have a hearing March 10 to appeal his dismissal for allegedly using a racial slur in berating black players. Mondragon threatened to sue for wrongful termination and other causes if the school did not give him an appeal. He also wants to return as coach.

Women

WASHINGTON STATE ENDS STREAK: The Cougars ended the second-longest losing streak in women's Division I at 45 on Thursday, beating California 67-64. Long Island University holds the record of 58 straight defeats from 1986-89.

"I think we believed it all along," junior guard Lindsey Egeland said. "We had been in this position before. And with 10 minutes left, we knew that's a time when teams go on runs. We all looked at each other and said, 'We're winning this game.' "

Egeland and Bianca McCall each made two free throws with less than 10 seconds left to give Washington State its first win since Nov. 29, 2001, when it beat Gonzaga.
