SARASOTA -- The ball didn't bounce Tampa Prep's way Tuesday, literally.
Randy Warren's bouncing free kick from 10 yards inside the center line was the only goal of the game, propelling Sarasota Cardinal Mooney to a 1-0 victory.
In the 76th minute of a scoreless tie, the Cougars were awarded a free kick just across midfield. Warren drilled a line drive that took a high hop before finding the back of the net.
"I saw a set play from the guy in the corner crossing from the far post," Tampa Prep keeper Kevin Karpay said. "I yelled, 'Away,' and my defenders tried to clear. No. 9 looked like he was going to get a head on the ball, so I shifted over to the center of the goal. He missed it, and you could see I didn't touch it.
"I couldn't believe it, and if I could do it all over again, I probably would have done the same thing because that's exactly what I thought he would have done."
The Terrapins failed to mount a counterattack in the game's final 14 minutes, letting Warren's goal stand as the game-winner.
"It's horrible," Karpay said. "I had a couple of saves today, headers, breakaways and such, to let one in like that is heartbreaking."
"I thought we played more with our hearts than our heads," Terrapins coach Jose DaCosta said. "We lost focus in front of the goal sometimes because we had chances inside the box."
FORT MYERS -- Bishop Verot defeated Berkeley Prep 1-0.
Senior Ross Lane saved the day for Bishop Verot by making 10 saves, two of them diving.
"Their keeper came up with some big-time saves," Bucs coach Dave Zimmerman said. "I really have to give credit where credit's due. He stopped some point-blank shots."
Berkley Prep finished its season at 10-12-4.
John Christenson scored the game's only goal. About 16 minutes into the game, he put a free kick from 30 yards into the far left side.
