Seminole moves on

SEMINOLE -- The first time Seminole saw Durant was during warm-ups. The Warhawks saw a considerably smaller team, and one that had played a little more than half as many games as Seminole. "We thought we were going to take this team lightly," said Seminole sophomore Richard Legg. "We thought we didn't have to play our best game and we'd be able to walk all over them and that wasn't the case."

Despite an unfocused effort, Seminole (20-6-2) pulled out the 3-0 win over the Cougars to advance to Friday's region final.

Neither team had its rhythm in the first half. The ball went back and forth over midfield without much control or direction. The Warhawks scored in the 30th minute when Morgan Riley sent in a header off of a throw-in from Corey Ahern. By halftime, the score was still 1-0 and the Cougars had made few threats on offense.

"We just were not doing what had gotten us here," said Durant coach David Peacock. "We seemed to be content to lay back and pick up the scraps that they gave us."

Not much improved for the Cougars (10-5-2) in the second period, but Seminole did appear to step things up.

The Warhawks got a second score after Durant defender Kenny Frissell was ejected with a red card for attempting to take out a player. In the 75th minute Ahern took the free kick, sending the ball into the box, where it was played off of a few players before Legg got a foot on it and put it through keeper Cole Dickenson's legs.

Legg scored a second goal in stoppage time.

Seminole will host Plant in the region final.
