Celebrating African-American culture
The Florida African-American Heritage Celebration started as a small gathering to collect stories and artifacts of Pinellas County's black residents. The effort has led to a new museum, the Pinellas County African American History Museum and Research Center, which opened last week in Clearwater, and to an annual festival that draws thousands.
The fourth annual event, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Pinewood Cultural Park in Largo, features storytelling, music, dancing, drumming, food and a film festival featuring movies starring Herb Jeffries, the first African-American singing cowboy.
Also on the slate: a performance by the Boys Choir of Tallahassee, a step show competition, gospel and jazz/blues music, an author's corner, historical displays and kids' activities.
The park is at Walsingham Road and 125th Street N. A shuttle will run to the park from free parking on 119th Street, just south of Ulmerton Road. (727) 532-1698. Admission is free.
