Exhibits, programs, publications and workshops are all part of the Tampa Bay History Center. The center is the place to research Tampa's multicultural heritage, the archaeology and history of the region. Some of the artifacts in the center's care are an authentic canteen and slouch hat from the Spanish American War; a Frederic Remington depiction of the "Cracker women" published in the 1895 issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine; a World War II bomber jacket, aviator leather cap, goggles and mask; and the steering wheel of the Three Friends tugboat, which assisted Cuban freedom fighters circa 1890.
Brochures provide tidbits of knowledge about Florida, dating to the 1500s, when European explorers arrived.
This month the center is celebrating Black History Month and a book signing was held Thursday to introduce Canter Brown Jr. and Barbara Gray Brown's newest book, Family Records of the African American Pioneers of Tampa and Hillsborough County. It contains the genealogies purchase.
Local schools and community organizations can borrow trunks full of historical artifacts, curriculum materials, replica clothing and photographs.
