These vessels will stop you

photo
[Boris Bally ]

Talk about traffic-stopping. These bowls and trays are handmade from old traffic signs by artist Boris Bally of Providence, R.I. He trained as a goldsmith and now spends his days recycling signs he gets from salvage dealers into usable art. (He created a chair out of a WRONG WAY sign.) The trays, which could be great wall art, are $70 each, three for $198. Bowls start at $170. See more or order at www.guild.com (type in BALLY in the search box, then click on artwork).

Light's on when power's out

[Panasonic]

For your Homeland Security kit, which we're hoping no one needs: Panasonic's new six-watt fluorescent power-failure light automatically turns on during power outages and, to conserve energy, shuts off when power is restored. It provides functional lighting for seven hours before its battery needs recharging. The unit can be mounted on the wall, and it has a built-in carrying handle. It's $39.99 at home centers, hardware stores.

Tampa Bay, and the livin' is easy

photo

Southern Living magazine makes the circuit around the Tampa Bay area in its February issue. See the before-and-after story of a Hyde Park bungalow, which owners Harvey Petty and Jeff Avery took from meek to chic. The magazine also visits the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota and celebrates the tasty treats at the Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City. A special travel section visits St. Petersburg's Museum of Fine Arts and Dali Museum, and the Dunedin Fine Art Center, referring to that city as a "coastal burg." Of course, we locals know that Dunedin is a far cry from the dictionary definition of burg, an "unexciting" village.
