No surprise here: Cougars dominate

CLASS 2A: Countryside sends nine wrestlers to state while winning by nearly 100 points.

CLEARWATER -- Led by past state champions Steve Spicuzza and Matt Turtzo, host Countryside High crushed the competition by scoring 224.8 points to capture their third straight region title.

Naples finished a distant second with 128 points.

Mike Flood, Dominic DeNunzio and Wesley Walker also won their weight classes for the Cougars, who will be sending nine wrestlers to the state tournament this week in Lakeland.

Ken Luu of Northeast, who had lost to Countryside's Sean Murphy last week at East Lake, had his revenge with an 11-5 victory over Murphy in a hotly contested match that saw the lead change four times in the 152-pound bracket.

"We're just real strong between 112 and 160 pounds," Countryside coach Dave Frayer said. "We have a good, solid group of kids who worked real hard and put in their dues."

The tournament was held up for just under 90 minutes due to a protest by Naples over a match with Lakewood Ranch. The disagreement was caused by a clerical error and a question on stalling calls but was finally resolved in time for the consolation round.
