The DVD is fast becoming a mainstay in U.S. homes. Here's a snapshot:

57 percent The amount of home video spending devoted to DVD purchase in 2002.

$8.7-billion The amount spent on buying DVDs in 2002; up from $5.4-billion 2001.

$2.9-billion The amount spent on DVD rentals in 2002; more than double the $1.4-billion in 2001.

260-million The approximate number of DVDs shipped in the fourth quarter of 2002; up 90 percent from the same period in 2001.

685-million The approximate number of DVDs shipped in 2002; up from 364.4-million in 2001.

20,000 The number of DVD titles on the market; up from nearly 9,000 two years ago.

25-million The number of DVD players sold to U.S. consumers in 2002, a 50 percent increase over 2001.

40-million The number of U.S. households with DVD players.

10-million The number of households with two or more DVD players.
