Man faces charges in stabbing incident
By ED QUIOCO, Times Staff Writer
One minute, the two men were watching late-night television together. The next, while the host's back was turned, his visitor stabbed him with a buck knife and slashed his face during a botched robbery attempt, according to Pinellas County sheriff's deputies. Daniel Patrick Howe, 28, of 14 N Hillcrest Ave., Clearwater was arrested and charged Tuesday morning with attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and resisting an officer without violence. The man he attacked, 60-year-old Jerry Reynolds of Oldsmar, suffered a 3-inch stab wound on his upper back and a 12-inch cut on his face, according to arrest reports. Howe and Reynolds were watching television about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds's home on Shore Boulevard, which is in the unincorporated area of Oldsmar. The two men were acquaintances and it was not unusual for Howe to visit, said Marianne Pasha, sheriff's spokeswoman. When Reynolds got up to get a drink, Howe followed him to the kitchen. The next thing Reynolds knew, Pasha said, Howe was attacking him. "The victim picked up a kitchen bar stool to try to defend himself and struck Daniel, the whole time asking 'What are you doing?' " Pasha said. "Then Daniel said, 'I'm here to rob you.' " Reynolds ran out of his house to a neighbor who called 911, according to a report written by Deputy Gary Williams. When deputies arrived, Howe had left. Reynolds suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. He left the hospital Sunday. Reynolds was able to identify Howe in a picture line up, Pasha said. After he was able to do that, deputies arrested Howe at his home at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. When deputies tried to grasp Howe's arms to arrest him, he pulled his arms away. That is why he was charged with resisting arrest. Deputies seized a buck knife from Howe, who also goes by the name Daniel P. Kautz, according to his arrest reports. Reynolds could not be reached for comment. Howe was being held without bail at the Pinellas County jail Tuesday. He was assigned a public defender Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to the three charges. -- Ed Quioco can be reached at (727) 445-4185 or quioco@sptimes.com . © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
