Decision on Bull's fate postponed for a week

TAMPA -- Raphael Toren must wait another week.

The South Florida guard had his eligibility appeal postponed Tuesday because of "a mutual belief that new information that is material to the case needs to be distributed among all parties," according to a release from the school. The hearing was rescheduled for Tuesday.

Toren, 20, a walkon from Israel, played in 31 games with a club team in Israel and received actual and necessary expenses, which USF has said upholds his eligibility. In January, however, the NCAA ruled he was a professional and ineligible.

A standout on Israel's junior national team, Toren was discharged from the military in September after serving two years. He joined USF after the first semester, on Dec. 15.

"I feel for the kid," USF coach Seth Greenberg said. "He did not, and never intended to, professionalize himself. The NCAA does not understand what it's like to be a soldier-athlete in Israel."

Top 25

NO. 14 MARYLAND 91, CLEMSON 52: Ryan Randle scored 18 and Steve Blake added 14 as the Terrapins won their final home game of the season.

Drew Nicholas and Jamar Smith each had 13 points for the Terrapins (18-7, 10-4 ACC), who have won four of five and have beaten Clemson 11 straight.

The defending national champions took over second place in the ACC, percentage points behind No. 12 Wake Forest and a half-game ahead of No. 6 Duke.

Sharrod Ford had 12 points and Edward Scott added 11 for the Tigers (15-9, 5-8), who shot 31 percent and saw a three-game winning streak halted.

Maryland opened the second half with a 27-4 run.

NO. 18 ILLINOIS 80, INDIANA 54: Brian Cook scored 17, including nine in a decisive run to start the second half, and the host Illini handed the Hoosiers their seventh loss in 10 games.

The Illini (19-5, 9-4 Big Ten) pulled away from a 39-30 halftime lead with a 25-15 run and led by as many as 28 points with 4:02 to go.

It was their third straight win overall and 16th in a row at home as they pulled into a second-place tie with Wisconsin in the conference. The Illini have won their past three home games by a total of 75 points.

Jeff Newton had 11 points for Indiana (16-10, 6-7).

Illinois opened the second half with a 9-2 run that was capped by Dee Brown's 3-pointer with 16:20 remaining. Indiana closed the gap to 10, but Cook made a layup and a 3-pointer and Brown hit from the outside to put Illinois in control for good.

NO. 1 ARIZONA: Sophomore forward Dennis Latimore, who played backup in all 57 games the past two seasons, has left the team.

ACC

N.C. STATE 75, UNC 67 (OT) Scooter Sherrill matched his career high with 22 points and Julius Hodge added 21 and the visiting Wolfpack remained in the NCAA Tournament hunt.

The Wolfpack (15-9, 8-5) secured its hold on fourth place in the ACC as Sherrill's 3-pointer 1:04 into OT gave his team the lead for good. He added four free throws in the final 44 seconds to help the Wolfpack tie an ACC and school record by going 22-for-22 from the free-throw line. N.C. State also did it against Maryland in 1965.

The Tar Heels (14-13, 4-9) lost it at the free-throw line, going 7-for-19.

Hodge sent the game into OT when he made a 12-footer in the lane over Jackie Manuel with 8.3 seconds left. He then blocked Manuel's 3-point attempt at the other end as the Tar Heels raced down the court to try to win it without calling a timeout.

Big East

SETON HALL 62 RUTGERS 52: Andre Barrett had 15 of his 17 points in the second half and the visiting Pirates closed the game with a 10-0 run. The Pirates (14-9, 8-4) won their seventh straight and swept the season series from Rutgers (11-14, 3-10).

Big 12

NEBRASKA 68, KANSAS STATE 61: Andrew Drevo scored 19 to lead four players in double figures for the Cornhuskers (10-16, 2-11), who snapped a nine-game losing streak. Kansas State (12-14, 3-10) lost its 13th straight Big 12 road game and has lost eight of nine since defeating Nebraska 77-53 in Manhattan, Kan., on Jan. 22.

IOWA ST. 81, COLORADO 55: Jake Sullivan scored 18 and Tim Barnes had 11 of his 17 in a decisive first-half run that propelled the host Cyclones. Jackson Vroman added 16 points and 15 rebounds and Marcus Jefferson scored 13 for the Cyclones (14-10, 4-9), who made a dramatic reversal after falling behind 16-0 and losing 84-69 at Colorado (16-10, 6-7) nearly three weeks ago.

Big Ten

IOWA 71, OHIO ST. 64: Chauncey Leslie hit two 3-pointers in an 8-0 run for the visiting Hawkeyes (14-10, 6-7), who didn't score in the opening 71/2 minutes and didn't hit a field goal until more than nine minutes had elapsed. Still, the Hawkeyes came back to dominate the second half, outscoring the Buckeyes (13-12, 6-8) 54-37.

State

VILLANOVA 75, MIAMI 56: Curtis Sumpter had a career-high 21 points and Derrick Snowden added 15 for the host Wildcats. Ricky Wright, playing his last game on campus, had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (15-10, 8-4). Darius Rice had 15 points and Paulo Coelho added 12 for Miami (10-14, 3-10).

Nation

OREGON: Junior guard Andre Joseph was suspended for a game because of conduct detrimental to the team.

Women

WISCONSIN: Coach Jane Albright resigned after school officials refused to grant her a long-term contract extension. Albright, who has the most wins in school history (161), will coach the team for the rest of the season.

UCF: Senior Jessica Scala was named Atlantic Sun player of the week. She scored a season-high 22 in Saturday's win over FAU.
