Lions cut Crowell, Howard for cap

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Lions released receiver Germane Crowell and kick returner Desmond Howard on Tuesday.

Chief executive Matt Millen also said the team has made "substantial progress" in restructuring the contract of defensive end Robert Porcher. He would count $10-million against next season's salary cap under his current agreement.

Howard, a 12-year veteran, missed the final seven games of last season with a neck injury. He won the Heisman Trophy at Michigan in 1991 and Super Bowl MVP with Green Bay in 1997, becoming the fourth player to win both awards.

Crowell played in just 10 games last season and was plagued by knee injuries. He had 22 receptions for 201 yards and one touchdown in 2002.

Crowell had his biggest season in 1999, when he had 81 receptions for 1,338 yards and seven touchdowns. He had spent his six-year career with the Lions.

BILLS: Free-agent defensive end Keith McKenzie signed, but terms weren't given.

BRONCOS: Defensive tackle Chester McGlockton was among seven released. By releasing him, the team saves $5.99-million in cap space.

COLTS: The Indiana Supreme Court ordered sports memorabilia dealer Michael Bertolini to pay $105,000 to quarterback Peyton Manning for autographing 2,500 items, including footballs, helmets and jerseys.

GIANTS: Running back Ron Dayne settled a lawsuit filed by a former Wisconsin teammate who said the Heisman Trophy winner caused an eye injury that ended his career. Lineman Patrick Daley filed the lawsuit in November 2000, two years after the November 1998 fight. The terms of the settlement were confidential.

RAVENS: Guard Edwin Mulitalo signed a seven-year deal but terms weren't given.

VIKINGS: Attorneys for the team filed documents Friday claiming that Korey Stringer's body never was tested for ephedra and that his use of the controversial supplement can be linked to the heatstroke that killed in 2000.
